Olympics roundup
Here's a sampling of Olympics preview pages from around the continent.
ADD: A couple of very pretty ones. St. Petersburg Times (Zach Wittig) and Detroit Free Press (Rick Nease).
The Buffalo News (and the always cool Vincent Chiaramonte).
Dallas Morning News (Rob Schneider) and Colorado Springs Gazette (Andy Rohrback).
The Washington Post (Greg Manifold).
The Minneapolis StarTribune has been doing a series of double trucks. (Above by Phill Spiker).
Here's a double truck from the Republican-American in Waterbury, Conn. (Scott Griffin design).
New York Times (Wayne Kamidoi, Joe Zeff illustration) and Albuquerque Journal (Scott Luxor).
And a couple exclusives from the Toronto Sun (Dave Ashton). They profiled 28 Canuck hopefuls.

USA Today photog Robert Hanashiro (also founder of sportsshooter.com) is at the Olympics and sends word that things are a bit harried so far.
"Lots of construction going on, even in the venues. As most of the journalists here have been saying for the past couple of weeks ... 'This will be very interesting.'
"I am hoping this ends up like Athens ... we had very low expectations and it was pretty good. After being here two weeks my expectations are *very* low. I have been to now nine Olympic Games (both Summer and Winter) and I have to honestly say that this is the least prepared city I have seen.
"But maybe I will be surprised."
Let the Games begin.

More covers of note:
• Washington Times (Scott Haring)
• Los Angeles Times
• Boston Globe (Brian Gross)

See? Now if we'd only have held the Olympics in TORINO instead of Turin, that town would have been prepared. When are you people going to start listening?
With Bayha and Emmet no longer posting on NPD, Vincent is the odds-on favorite for "Most Ripped Off Designer" of 2006 (I think that's an SND category now).
Other remarks: I'm wondering how Manifold did that cover illustration. ... We're on pace to run out of our collective vat of "Turin Blue" ink by about Day 4.

The Post's illustration was done by freelancer Steve McCracken.
