Branding the newspaper

Seems that Rupert Murdoch is closer to owning the Wall Street Journal, which reminds us all that newspapers have a value which goes beyond daily ROP ads. I'm thinking of a recent Charlie Rose interview (see video below) with Warren Buffett, where the two discussed our lovely print business extensively.

Buffett, who owns the Buffalo News, admitted the property has an ego-boosting value. He also noted that businesses like the WSJ and the New York Times, etc., are big brand names. Their worth goes beyond a profit statement.

(Fast forward the video and start at 8:56).

My point: In the news this week, with USA Today's 25th anniversary approaching in September, the paper announced that it is extending its brand to books.

Planned for this holiday season is a sports year in review coffee-table book and a collectible hardcover, "25 years of USA Today." You can also look for Sudoku collections, business guides, calendars and more.
