Today's San Jose Mercury News sports front. War-sized headline avoided.
What did the San Francisco Chronicle do on "Sporting Green"? See it here and order your own print for $65.
Today's Chicago Sun-Times sports front. " ... we choose to focus instead on Henry Aaron, who remains the rightful home-run king." - signed by Sun-Times sports staff.
Today's Globe and Mail sports front. Canadians don't need a stinking photo.
Today's Santa Rosa Press Democrat sports front. Good idea: Just push the whole sports cover inside and make a special wrap. Saves a lot of workflow stress.
Today's Boston Globe, including an inside display page.
Today's LA Times. One story front.

SI.com wasn't afraid of editorializing with Photochop.
ESPN.com had Bonds with a wedgie.
Yahoo! Sports may have had a pivotal moment from this, too. They offered a quick link to video of the HR and added Tony Gywnn's comments in a SportsCenter-like package within the hour.
I continue to be a fan of their "KISS" approach.

Obviously, Toronto is the one to which I keep returning.
It looks like a rather thought-out plan to meet color deadlines. But whether it is or not, it's informative. I wonder if they ran the photo at all?

Added the Sun-Times, courtesy of John Silver. Interesting take.

The Sun-Times is about as relevant as an umbrella in a drought. Its main purpose in these parts is to take up space in stacks at the vendors' shops and later in the finer recycling bins.

Somewhere in the last 10 years, I missed where Barry Bonds was suspended from Major League Baseball for steroid use.
I guess I was asleep that day, or maybe I was working on new color to use in breakout boxes.
And maybe the US government has a stronger case against him & BALCO than tax evasion. Is Bonds the new Al Capone or something?
Just curious when it became a fact that Bonds used "steroids".
Especially when it comes to covering the NEWS of him breaking the record.

Great post, Matt. I must have missed that suspension, too.

I've got a few more pages I'll put up Friday morning, including the Merc's special section.
